Before choosing the right toilet paper holder, it’s important to know the available types. Then you’ll know which one works best in your bathroom. It depends a lot on its layout.

TP holders used to be made of ceramic and built into the wall. Although this type still exists, there are also models that are easier to install. They don’t need to be embedded during construction and have become more popular.

Recessed toilet paper holders
When there is a wall or cabinet next to the toilet, this model can be installed in a comfortable position.
There are numerous models, in stainless steel, ceramic, wood or plastic, with the paper roll apparent or covered by a lid, single or double.
Wall-mounted toilet paper holders
This type is recommended to the same layout situations we saw above. But instead of embedded in a wall or cabinet, it is just screwed.
Wall-mounted toilet paper holders are easier to install than recessed ones and don’t require previous planning. Thus, they are ideal for existing bathrooms not to be renovated.
This is also the cheapest type.
If you prefer not to screw the holder for some reason, like you don’t want to damage the tiles, or are afraid to drill into a pipe that might be in the wall, you can look for a model with suction cups:
Freestanding toilet paper holder
Your bathroom layout may not allow you to fix a toilet paper holder in a comfortable position. So the best option is to place it on the floor, in front of or beside the toilet.
There are various types of freestanding models, for more than one roll, with built-in trash bin or magazine rack, etc.
This is the most expensive type.
Tank-mounted toilet paper holders
Another option that does not require drilling into the wall, and is a little cheaper than freestanding models, these holders are made to be hung on the toilet tank.
However, this type neither looks good nor is comfortable to use.
The ideal height to install toilet paper roll holders is 60cm / 2ft from the floor.
