Standard Shower Door Size & Ideal Custom Dimensions

Ordering custom shower doors and wondering what the ideal dimensions for them are?

Before you decide that, it’s important to know the shower area shape and the doors opening system. Take a look at this article if you need help to decide those.

Minimum, recommended and maximum shower door widths

Shower areas usually start at 80×80 cm / 30×30″. However, this space is tight, and you should make it larger if possible. For square shower areas, at least 90×90 cm / 36×36″, and for rectangular ones, 80×120 cm / 30×48″ for a comfortable use.

For square corner shower areas in small bathrooms, the minimum dimensions are 80×80 cm / 30×30″.
Shower doors standard size - rectangular area
For rectangular shower areas, 80×120 cm / 30×48″ is comfortable enough.

Therefore, the minimum width of the total door spam is 80 cm / 30″, which is too much for a door width. This dimension is usually divided into two sliding door sheets or one hinged door and a fixed panel.

Consider from 50 to 60 cm / 20″ to 24″ for the door sheet.

Standard shower door height

Shower doors typically end at 1,90 m / 75″, but ready-made models are usually shorter, as they are supposed to be installed on top of a raised sill. Or much shorter if supposed for on top of a bathtub front.

If you are ordering custom doors, you can make them as tall as you wish. The standard height may be too short for tall people, if the doors have a frame on top (if not, it doesn’t matter if the door is shorter than you).

You may also want a floor-to-ceiling enclosure, in order to keep the steam inside the shower area, protecting the bathroom cabinets. In this case, a window in the shower area is recommended, so the steam can be released with the shower door closed.
