What is the Ideal Size for Your Bathroom Sink?
When buying sinks, specially online, sometimes it’s hard to know the ideal size for your bathroom.
Looking at the product pictures, two sinks may look quite similar. But paying attention to the technical specifications, we see that each one has very different dimensions.
Have you seen our articles on types of sinks for countertops and on freestanding or wall-mounted sinks, for bathrooms with no countertop? If not, you may want to check them out and decide your sink type before determining its size.
Now, how do you know which sink dimensions will work best for your bathroom?

1. Consider the bathroom size
The ideal sink dimensions will vary according to the size of the bathroom, and consequently the countertop.
In a large bathroom, it’s worth having a large countertop and a large sink, because you get space to support and store things under the counter, and a larger sink is more comfortable to use and spills less.
For small bathrooms, it’s better to study the maximum possible countertop size that won’t disturb the doors opening or make the rest of the bathroom tight.
Then choose a proportional sink. On a smaller countertop, a smaller sink is ideal, both aesthetically and functionally. You don’t need to loose counter space or make the rest of the bathroom tighter to have a bigger sink, right?
So only consider a big sink if you have a big space.
2. Consider the faucet installation type
It’s also important to know what your faucet will be like in order to check if the exact dimensions of the chosen sink will work.
If the faucet is deck-mounted and will be placed behind the sink, it’s necessary to leave at least 10cm/4″ between the sink and the wall.
For wall-mounted faucets, the sink can even touch the wall, but it’s good to position it in such a way that the water falls from the faucet more or less in the center of the sink.
If your sink is small, the faucet may release the water too close to the front of the sink if you place it close to the wall.
3. Consider your countertop depth
Leave at least 5cm/2″ between the front of the sink and the edge of the countertop (for undermount or drop-in sinks). For vessel sinks, consider this dimension in front of its base. If the top of the bowl goes beyond the countertop, no problem.
The most important is to leave this dimension visible and seamless, so as not to weaken this part.
And aesthetically speaking, so it looks continuous, not like a different countertop on each side of the sink.
That’s all! It’s not so hard to find out the ideal bathroom sink size, right?
