How many light fixtures should your bedroom have?
The first step is deciding which parts of the room should be lit up.
If you have a single light source in the center of the ceiling, it’s harder to create a cozy atmosphere. That’s because you’ll need a strong light source to illuminate the whole room with a single lamp.
For a cozy room, try spreading many less intense lights around the room.
Start by figuring out which points in the room need direct light. That is, at least one light focused directly on them without obstruction.
In bedrooms, these points will probably be wardrobes, bookcases, dressing tables, cupboards, desks. All those fitments where it is important to see what is on them.
Over the bed and in the rest of the room, indirect light should be enough and more cozy. That means these point don’t need a focus of light directed to them. Whatever light they get from lamps pointing to other directions will light them up with enough intensity.
How can you improve your bedroom lighting?
Have you decided the spots to be directly lit up in your bedroom? Good, now let’s look at some strategies you can use to create these direct and indirect light sources.
Recessed lights in false ceiling + LED tapes in moldings
When direct light points are needed, a false ceiling allows you to create as many points and wherever you want.
General lighting is reinforced by indirect light coming from the moldings. Instead of touching the wall, there is an offset with a structure for embedding LED tapes. This solution also enhances the wall covering.
Pendant lights over the bedside tables can save space and are a stylish alternative to table lights.
Recessed lights in false ceiling + wall sconces
The molding is just one of the ways to complement the general lighting. In this example, there is no mold.
Here the false ceiling only embeds recessed lights at specific points to illuminate the circulation and the wardrobe. They are complemented by wall sconces fixed on the headboard, replacing table lights.
If you have any electric outlet on the wall, you don’t need a renovation before installing a headboard like that. You can pull the electrical wires behind the headboard to the points where the sconces will be placed.
Over the bed there is no point of direct light, because that is where you would prefer to rest with a milder light.
Track lights only
You don’t need a false ceiling to distribute lights wherever you want. In this room, lights on a track that runs close to the walls focus on pictures and pieces of furniture with objects.
There is no complement with indirect light sources. The center of the room only receives light indirectly from the same lights.
Ceiling or pendant light + table lights
However, you don’t need a false ceiling or a track to distribute points around the ceiling. It is also possible to create a cozy atmosphere with a single point in the center of the room.
You may prefer keeping a single lamp because you don’t have any points that need direct light in the room. Or because you don’t want to spend money or time in a renovation at all.
If that’s your case, the best choice is a cool ceiling or pendant light, with a dome that hides the bulb and diffuses its light.
You can complement it with table lights, like in the bedroom above, or something different like:
See how many possibilities you have to improve your bedroom lighting? Spending more or less, with or without a renovation, its totally worth it spending time to choose and position the perfect light fixtures. Have you decided what your strategy will be?
