Types of Light Fixtures: Ceiling, Wall, Floor and Table Lamps

Buying light fixtures is not complicated, but there are different types, with technical names you might not be familiar with.

In this article, I’ll explain the characteristics of all types of fixtures and which situation each one is best suited for.

Light fixtures are classified by the places where they are installed or supported: ceiling, wall, floor or table.

Within each group, we still have different types considering the method of installation, the format and where the light is directed to.

Table lamp

This type is not fixed, it’s only supported on a table, and can have a focused or ambient light, with the lamp covered by a dome or not.

Wall sconce

It can be only fixed onto the wall or embedded into it.

The light can be direct, with the bulb visible, diffuse, with a translucent glass or acrylic plate in front of it, or indirect, with an opaque plate covering the bulb and allowing light to come out close to the wall.

This type can still be fixed to the wall but detached from it by a rod, and have the lamp covered by a dome.

Wall beacon

A wall beacon is a type of lamp that has its light directed at the floor, usually embedded in the wall, and is installed at a low height, so the lamp is not visible and only the path is lit.

Its common to use beacons for lighting stair treads.

Floor beacon

Like the wall beacon, its function is to light the floor.

This type can have a low column and a lamp facing downwards, with an element covering it so that direct light is not visible.

Or it can be embedded in the floor, with the light facing upwards.

Floor lamp

This type is not fixed, only placed on the floor, and can have a focused or ambient light, with the lamp covered by a dome.

It can have different heights, with the lamp closer or farther from the floor.

Spit

The spit is also a low column installed on the floor, but this type can direct the light anywhere, usually sideways and upwards, illuminating a garden.

As the name suggests, its base is shaped like a skewer so it is possible to sink it in the ground at the desired height, which may be more evident or more discreet, closer to the ground.

Recessed light

It can have different shapes, and can provide focused or ambient light.

Pendant light

Ceiling lamp, fixed to the ceiling, but detached from the ceiling, suspended by some type of wire.

When the distance from the ceiling is small, this type has the same function as the ceiling light.

When it is large, it should be over a table or counter, lighting it more closely.

The pendants may or may not have domes.

Track light

The track light, instead of being fixed directly to the ceiling, is fixed to a track, which allows you to create a line of lamps and position each one to your liking.

The fixtures are small and focused. Most models are articulated so they can be directed exactly to the point you want to light.

The opening angle of the light focus will depend on the types of light fixtures.

Important! Fixtures don’t usually come with bulbs included. You will have to buy them separately, so here’s how to choose bulbs.
