Types of Materials & Possible Finishes for Wardrobe Doors
Wondering what’s the best material for your new wardrobe doors? And what options of finishes you have for them?
Nowadays, closets are usually made of wood chipboard (MDF, MDP or plywood). These materials replaced solid wood because they are lighter, more economical, ecological and durable.
For the closet interior, the best option is a finished chipboard. Manufacturers offer some color and texture options so you don’t have to add a layer of any type of finish. This makes cabinet making cheaper and quicker.
The most common color for internal shelves and drawers is white. It’s cheaper than more elaborate textures and brighter, which makes the wardrobe easier to clean and helps you viewing your clothes.
However, for the doors, we have some other options.

Finished MDF, MDP or plywood
The most economical option is using finished chipboard for the doors as well as for the interior. If you don’t intend to draw attention to the wardrobe, white is a clean and safe choice.
Laminate
You can also coat the chipboard with laminate. This option is more expensive and laborious than using a finished chipboard. The advantage is a wider range of colors, patterns and shininess’s offered.
Choosing a different laminate will give your room an original look and draw more attention to the closet. You can choose a color, a pattern that imitates wood or another material you like, or even a high gloss finish.
Lacquer
Lacquered wardrobe doors have a more sophisticated finish than laminate. The range of color options in this case is pretty much endless.
The disadvantages are higher price and lower resistance to scratches. It’s a delicate finish, that must be well taken care of when using and cleaning the wardrobe. Maybe not the best option for kids bedrooms.
High gloss lacquered doors are commonly chosen, but not the only option. You can have different textures, from super shiny to completely mat.
Natural wood veneer
Wardrobe doors can also be covered with natural wood veneer, that give the doors a solid wood appearance. It’s beautiful, chic and cozy.
Veneers are thin layers of natural wood. Instead of having a solid wood door, you’ll have a lighter and more ecological chipboard door covered with natural wood. The result looks just like a solid wood door.
There are many options of wood species, with different patterns, colors and prices. The availability depends on the region you live.
The downside of this option is the high price.
Mirror
Another option is having mirrored doors. A good call for small bedrooms, cause mirrors make the space feel larger, and you won’t have to find a place for a full length mirror next to the wardrobe.
Glass
Glass doors protect the interior from dust, but leave the clothes exposed.
This option is for those who are well organized and have plenty of space in the closet, so nothing is out of place.
It’s an expensive option, as the glass has to be reinforced to be used on large doors.
Curtains
If you want to save money, a solution is to replace the closet doors with a curtain.
Another advantage of it is to open the entire span without taking up circulation space. It can also look cool and relaxed, specially with a bedroom decor keeping the same style.
