Laundry Countertop with Undermount Sink: Ideal Dimensions and Advantages

Are you planning a countertop with undermount sink in your laundry room? In this article, you’ll find out the advantages of having one and the ideal dimensions for you to design yours.

As for the countertop material, backsplash and edge profile, the choices will depend on your kitchen countertop.

If your laundry room is next to the kitchen and you can afford using the same settings for the laundry countertop, you should.

If you prefer something cheaper, no problem. You can refer to the kitchen articles on the links above to find your best choices for the laundry room anyway.

Advantages of countertops with undermount or drop-in sinks in laundry rooms

As an alternative to freestanding or wall-mounted utility sinks, countertops with drop-in or undermount stainless steel sinks are becoming more popular in laundry rooms.

This is a more expensive option, but it is interesting for the extra workspace and undercounter cabinets you get.

Laundry countertops also make the laundry room look more beautiful and organized.

How wide should your laundry countertop be?

As large as possible, considering enough space left for cabinets and appliances.

In most laundry rooms layouts, the sink is next to the washer and dryer machine(s).

Set the necessary width for the machine(s) by checking in the product manuals its widths and the required offsets on the sides. Read about washers and dryers if you still haven’t chosen yours.

Then, decide if the countertop will go over the machine(s). If so, you’ll gain even more work space.

Just make sure your appliances are the front load type. Dryers and combo units are always front load, but there are two types of washers. Read more about front load and top load washers here.

Then check the wall width and remove the width required for the machine(s). The dimension left over will be that of the countertop, if it does not pass over the machine(s), or of the part where the sink will be with embedded, if it does.

Ideal height and depth of a laundry countertop

Continued counter over washer and dryer

If the laundry countertop goes over the machine(s), its height and depth depend on their dimensions. Check the appliances height, depth and required offsets and make the countertop above them.

If you want a continued countertop, with the same height and depth all the way, it will get higher and deeper than what would be recommended for the sink.

In this case, pay attention to the faucet placement. With such a deep counter, a wall-mounted faucet will be too far away from the front of the counter, and therefore, uncomfortable to use.

So, for continued countertops over the appliance(s), opt for a deck-mounted faucet, place the sink close to the front of the counter and leave empty counter space behind the faucet.

Ideally, the faucet nozzle should be around 35 cm / 14 inches from the front of the counter.

So the greater depth is no longer a problem. But the height can still be, if you or anyone who will often use this sink is short. Don’t worry if everyone there is tall, as the difference isn’t big.

To avoid this and get the ideal dimensions for the sink, you can have two separate parts, one over the machines and another one with the embedded sink.

Counter by washer and dryer or separated in two parts

If the countertop is not going over the machines or you are having two different parts, you can follow the standard height of freestanding sinks: 90 cm / 3 ft, and make the depth from 65 cm / 2 ft.

Also check the sink depth and leave at least 7 cm / 3 inches on front and behind it, in case your faucet is wall-mounted. If you prefer a deck-mounted faucet, leave at least 14 cm / 6 inches behind the sink.
