Kitchen countertop height
The height of a kitchen countertop is actually the only standard dimension: 92 cm / 3′ from the floor. This is the most important dimension for a comfortable use.
Kitchen countertop depth
There is not a standard depth for countertops, because it depends on the chosen sink, range or cooktop and faucet. Check the articles on these links for more information on how to choose them if you still haven’t.
Minimum
Once you know the dimensions of the chosen items that will be embedded in the countertop, you get the minimum depth for it, considering an offset between 5 – 10 cm / 2 – 4″ where needed (on front and behind sinks and cooktops, behind ranges).
You should then get to something around:
If the kitchen is small, decide what is most worthwhile: a narrower countertop leaving more circulation space, or a deeper one with a larger sink and more space for dishes.
It depends on the available width for the countertop. If it has to be really small, it’s probably worth it making it a little deeper.
Maximum
What if you have room for a deeper countertop? Is there a maximum recommended depth?
Again, it depends on the faucet type. Keep the counter up to 55 cm / 22″ deep if the faucet is wall-mounted. Otherwise, it will get uncomfortable to use.
There is no problem on making the counter deeper if you are installing a deck-mounted faucet. Keep the sink and the faucet close to the front and leave the extra room behind them.
Also consider that whatever you install on the wall above the counter will be harder to reach. In case you are having a range hood, it must be right on top of the range. So, with a deeper counter, you should get an island (ceiling-mounted) model.
Anyway, I wouldn’t make it deeper than 75 cm / 30″. It would look weird and have corners so hard to reach that I don’t think this extra depth would be helpful for you.
Kitchen countertop width
Now for the width, there’s even less of a standard recommendation than for the depth. It really depends on your kitchen size and shape.
